The story of Alta Orsa Winery begins, as the best ones do, with the land. In Hopland, tucked into the folds of Mendocino County wine country, the lines between vineyard, wild hillside, and human hands tend to blur. Ours is a place shaped as much by weather and soil as by the people who choose to listen to them.

If you’re searching for a Hopland winery that leans into regenerative farming, organic winegrowing, and a slower, more grounded way of making wine, you’ve found us. Alta Orsa is small, a bit scrappy, and deeply rooted in place.

We thought it might be worth introducing the “estate” itself, as if it were one of us:

Name: Alta Orsa Estate

Birthplace: Hopland, Mendocino County, California

Work History: Duncan Springs Resort → sheep pasture → regeneratively farmed vineyard

Hobbies: photosynthesis, fermentation, soil building, geology, and the occasional bout of bird-watching

Top Wine & Food Pairing: the rugged bramble of our 2017 Orsa Mendocino Cabernet Sauvignon, grown here on the estate, alongside a steaming pan of shakshuka

Favorite Season: a Northern California “Mediterranean” winter, when the hills turn impossibly green and the vineyard exhales

Good Read: Word of Mouth, a local Mendocino County publication worth lingering over

Currently Listening To: the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast by John Kempf

Fun Fact: Beyond the vineyard rows and Sanel Valley views, there’s a quieter corner of the property. Cross a small, moss-softened bridge and you’ll find a stone courtyard tucked beneath the trees. At its center, a brass frog hums with naturally carbonated mineral water, even in the heat of summer. Long before this was a vineyard, travelers came here for that spring, believing in its ability to restore what had been worn down.
